The Paradox of Gas Prices

A year ago, when gas prices were at their height, there was a debate about what this paradox you're talking about. I think people were responding on some level to the fact that there's this sort of background noise of things getting more and more expensive. Does this mean we shouldn't root for more buses and trains? If everyone actually needs a car, should the investment in public transit be as significant as people like me want it to be? We need to understand that while most of us should be driving less, there are certain people whose lives can be majorly improved by having access - even just access to a car.
