The History of the Pulmonary Artery Catheter
In 1997, the SCCM sponsored a multidisciplinary consensus conference. Most of the recommendations ended up being based on expert opinion because there was so little reliable data available. This consensus conference statement was highly criticized by some because they didn't use a formal evidence-based medicine process. It isn't clear that a randomized controlled trial is the best mechanism to increase understanding about when we should be using pulmonary artery catheter.
