Ground water circulating below and carrying chemicals from one place to another creates a great possibility of a biosphere underground. Gale craters was not only habitable when the lakes were there, but probably for long afterwards. Perseverance is doing that now in a jezro crater, both with instruments it has on board, but even more so by collecting samples of return to earth.
