consciousness is not publicly observable. You can't look inside somebody's head to see their feelings and experiences. To do the science, we have to have principles that link observable behavior two conscious, unobservable, conscious experience. If a subject has an experience, they can report it; if you want toknow, if someone's having an experience, ask them.
