What Makes Reading History Worthwhile?
There's something very profound about finding a small sense of connection with a person from the past. And i imagine it's even more powerful as a historian when you're writing about it, because you're working off documents that perhaps are in their own handwriting and things like that. I find turning to individuals and their experience of that time, they become my guides to the foreign land you refer to as history. Each one of those becomes a kind of window that allows you just a little insight into the gulf between us to day and the world that i'm writing about 100 or 50 years ago.
