The Free Coloreds

On the eve of the revolution, they numbered about 30 thousand. Since 99 % of the men who sought their fortunes in saint domain were de men, the colony was soon populated with a significant num of free colors. According to the law, if a white man married a black slave woman, she and her children automatically became free. But over time, more and more free colored children grew up and became free co adults. Now you will see them sometimes referred to as the mulattoes, but no one to day calls them that because, a, it's a slur, and b, as we'll see next week, its technically inaccurate.
