Sed Contra: A Podcast of Catholic Theology

CHAPTER

The Power of Holy Orders in the Deaconate

Under the current code of canon law the deacon is an ordinary minister of holy communion. Under the former code he was an extraordinary minister of both. It's hard to identify one that could not also be done by the lay faithful with proper delegation or proper commission so what is the power of holy orders in the deaconate? And if the church were able to change the designation of ordinary versus extraordinary and a canonical sense there, would it have any impact on how we use Holy Communion as well as other sacraments within the church?
