In Canada, if you're an independent contractor a company cannot give you benefits or contribute to a fund for you in any way. I mean they could, but then they would risk having you be reclassified as employee and that's because of the way that the law is written. The easiest, most simple low hanging fruit solution that can be done today in Canada and in the US is that we can remove that factor, the presence of benefits from worker classification tests. Utah did it last week by passing a law that said two independent contractors can't be used against each other. So this isn't going to fundamentally change where our country is headed which is north towards decoupling work entirely from employment
