19 80 saw two legal changes that boosted the commercialization of genetic engineering in the united states. The supreme court allowed companies to patent whole organisms, while congress passed a law that obliged state funded universities to patent and exploit discoveries made by their scientists. Light recombinant in shelin is now used all over the planet. Hundreds of other drugs, including growth hormone and blood factors are now produced this way.
