I always marvel at how this movement just flows along, and that's partly because we're almost never just in one tempo for more than a few bars at a time. This is where Tchaikovsky's ability to write something with tremendous anticipation comes in. The other effect of all this movement is that we've heard two themes and it feels like no time has passed at all. It is the theme that opened the first movement, making a terrifying return blasted out as loudly as possible in the trumpets.
