The traditional image for the early tudor man that henry essentially is is, as you say, quite a substantial, imposing presence. And there's not really much sense of a waist, especially when you've got the gown on. So it's a fascinating difference in terms of clothing. There's no danger of being untucked because the bottoms and the tops are tied together. The only way to go to the loo is that cob piece for a man. By the 15 forties, young, fashionable men have either got a very short gown, or they are starting to move towards replacing that with a cloak instead.
