The History of Shopping
The word shopping doesn't exist until towards the end of the eighteenth century, when you start to get shops that are meant to be attractive spaces for people to want to go into and dream think about what they might possibly buy. Before that, you wouldn't have had any sense at all of shopping as a kind of potential leisure activity. The book is quite fascinating to see the way in which shopping moves in one direction, then backwards in another direction, and then comes back again in the same direction.
