The Story of Turkey's Accession to NATO

West German accession puts to an end any idea that NATO is for anything except confronting the Soviet Union. Turkey then showed that it could demonstrate its importance to the Americans by sending troops to Korea. But also, it'd been clear rather earlier than this, that the Cold War in Europe had a Mediterranean dimension and actually a Middle East dimension.
