Are Moral Convictions a Part of the Identity Fused Idea?

There also seems to be this other element, if you share a moral conviction with the group, that that makes you feel superior in some ways. So I just wonder if at some point, developing over time, what started out as moral convictions can really be this identity fused idea of "this is who we are" And then you stick to it more than maybe you should and in light of the evidence. That's an interesting hypothesis to my knowledge but one that hasn't been tested.
