The History of Lighthouses

During the 18 fifties, powerful storms known as norheasters significantly damaged Rockland's water front. As a result, citizens and politicians began lobbying congress to fund a protective breakwater. The original plan for two short breakwaters turned into a design for one longer breakwater. In order to keep vessel from striking this new obstacle, lanterns were placed at the end of it. A man named charles ames became the attendant of the small beacon for the pay of 25 dollars a month. He used to sound a metal triangle when visibility was bad.
