I was a street kid, I mean my parents were as I described them so I had this academic anchor but I was out there playing in the streets on 170th street in Washington Heights with kids that did not go to my public school. They came from very very different kind of working class Irish and Italian families and you know it was not easy to belong in that kind of environment without a certain kind of toughness. But somehow for me it was the perfect karmic assignment because I found out how people not like myself just live and what their issues were and I found a way to actually be friend and even in some fundamental way belong.
