HIV was not recognized as a pediatric disease until the 1980s, when Dr. Tom Frieden started looking at it in children. He says he and his colleagues fought to get funding for research into how HIV affects pregnant women and their babies. "The ounce of prevention is worse, the pound of cure," said Frieden.
