The Importance of Disclosed Borderline Personality Disorder

Some psychiatrists feel that BPD diagnosis cannot be made in the emergency department when patients are in crisis. I have a slightly different perspective on it and I'm much more comfortable making the diagnosis of BPD in the emergency room assuming that the patient is able to provide adequate history or there's sufficient collateral that I'm able to trust. The real shift in my opinion comes in making sure that you're changing and adapting the questions to really get accurate information about the longitudinal history and not just the cross-sectional.
