The Importance of Appreciation

The idea of appreciation is quite puzzling, because if someone's not performing really well, it's hard to show them appreciation. And I want to actually use children as an example for that. So let's not talk about companies and work. Let's talk about our kids. There is a Western way of raising kids, which is all about self-esteem and giving them confidence and so on. But then there is the other side of the world where we just used to tell our kids, unless you get an A-plus, you don't have the right to talk to me. Where do you stand between those two?
