The Legacy of the Cambodian Court

The court helped to build out some of the principles of customary international law for crimes against humanity and war crimes. It also delivered jurisprudence on a principle called joint criminal enterprise, which is a common way that international prosecutors seek to go after big fish in cases of mass atrocities. People who had suffered abuses under the Khmer Rouge were allowed to join the trials alongside the prosecutors so they could seek reparations. A whole generation of Cambodian lawyers and court administrators worked on this court as it was well funded with international sound practices.
