Bhopal Gas Tragedy Compensation
In 1985, the Indian government passed the Gas Leak Disaster Act. Union Carbide had several direct representatives on the board of Union Carbide India. The company took moral responsibility and paid $470 million to the Indian government. By the end of October 2003, according to the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department, compensation had been awarded to 554,895 people for injuries received and 15,310 survivors of those killed.
