Scientists use telescopes on the ground and in space to map asteroids. They are looking for a moving point of light against the stars. There could be things hidden from our view because they're on the other side of the sun. Some will pass earth and go by us, and some will hit us. But you're saying they're all on their own orbits around the sun. I guess i would think of asteroids as just sort of like space rocks, zooming space, like in a straight line.
Scientists are constantly searching for asteroids that could crash into Earth. But if they find one, will they be able to do anything about it? NASA has launched a spaceship that will slam into an asteroid to find out.
