The Silmaril and a Tree

I would assume that the Simmaril was removed from the tree after the battle and disposed of at a later time. If I hit a great treasure in a tree and my arch nemesis found and tried to take it I would not leave it there afterwards. So points for having likely been taking place in the first age. But still Elrond uses the past tense was hidden. We know fain or sons took the Simmarils and burned them and then disposed of them in fire and water. They didn't burn the SimmarIL. And listen to his podcast I've missed pronounced Silmaril wrong since my days in junior high school. It's really killing me.
