The term spiritual bypassing was first coined by psychologist and Buddhist teacher John Wellwood in 84. It describes the use of spirituality to legitimize certain behaviors or to avoid dealing with psychological challenges, such as painful feelings or unhealed wounds. "I feel like I can kind of see where this isn't exactly a perfect approach," says host Jarrett Bellini. But it does make him think about some of the people that he sees on social media who say God will get me through it.
