CHAPTER

A Strange Tactic for a Writer

It's a very peculiar, complicated decision that the narrator makes so early in the story. It's also interesting because she puts herself in a position of further privilege at a later point. She mentions that she's supposed to have grown up in this distinct European country far away from the wars and she wasn't supposed to know about those things. You would expect from a writer an instinct to be constantly telling stories or giving opinions on stories. But for me, you know, I think this ability to keenly listen to other stories, without interrupting it, is an incredibly important sort of writerly talent.
