The Alexander Romans by Jules Goudier

Alexander the Great is one of the most exciting adventures in the Alexander Romans. He invented, according to his story, the first ever submarine - a glass diving bell fixed to his ship on the surface of the sea by a rope. The text says that he saw fish, whose figures he had never dreamed of. These forms were divers and horrible, creeping things crawling on the sea bottom. And they came sailing up to the side of the cage and his diving bell, looked in and turned away. So he fell down on the floor of his vessel of glass and laid there without a life.
