The book is about the rich burials of upper paleolithic europe. The authors say that these burials actually aren't evidence of hirarchy at all. They're just ritually celebrated freaks with unusual bodies or birth defects, they write. It seems extremely unlikely that paliolithic europe produced a stratified elite that just happened to consist largely of hunchbacks, giants and dwarfs.
