The Value of Brokers

Brokers facilitate the market clearing, right? For the risk. So where does the value come from? We used to say like back in a day when it wasn't electronic trading, if traders had to talk to them, talk to each other, nothing would ever get done. It's just basically saying like insurance isn't needed.
