Isidor and Beat didn't make any great scientific advances. Instead, they merely preserved and restated some modest version of ancient learning. Their careers underline the remarkable role which the Church played in preserving knowledge. They also demonstrate that the study of nature never disappeared entirely. The Latins may have been far behind the ancient Greeks or their contemporaries in the Islamic world, but even during this nadir of scientific thinking, something survived.
