The Great Depression of the Thirties Was Also a Civilian Crisis in Its Own Right
During the second world war, there was massive new union growth. Unions were largely accepted into the institutional structure of the war effort. They agreed to not go on strike or make any threats of strikes for the duration of the war. And so in effect, all hopes or aspirations that workers might have for better treatment, better pay, were all put off for the durationof the war. After those same workers survived years of poverty and precariety through the depression, all this was shelved and delayed.
