There is also a story that one sunday in january of 18 forty one, when whitman was about 20 years old, he was publicly denounced by a minister. This led to feverish reports of bloody betding. The congregation became inflamed and went to a place where hot tar was available for mending fishing nets. They took the tar and hunted down whitman at the home of one of the victims,. And man fled to a nearby home where he sought refuge in an attic. But as the story goes, he was rescued by a woman named aunt lena and into a doctor's home and nursed back to health - not appearing in public for a month.
