Foucault is clearly identifying and he's going to go much further back than Aristotle to show that this wasn't always the case. There were very different approaches to knowledge before Aristotle. Now what else is interesting is that if you were to follow along Aristotle's line of inquiry, there's no reason to say that this doesn't also apply to animals because animals experience sensations that they find pleasurable and that are useless in themselves.
