How Does the Process of Trust Work?

In romantic relationships, how does the process of trust work? Should you begin by trusting the person innocent of proven guilty, or should you begin with distrust and, with time, gather evidence to support the trust? I don't know why trust enters at any point, really. Do you want to, you have comments on that? Sure.
