The Relationship Between Mercenaries and Soldiers
In seventeenth century europe, there was a heavily ethnic aspect to mercenary service. If you've met a scottish person, it's because they were a mercenary ing a gun or a pike and ten. Same thing at end of the roman empire, where difference between barbarian and soldier is kind of hard to suss out. Those things can get kind of mixed up together in ways that are really interesting.
