Jeremy Thorpe asked Bessel to help him kill Norman in 1975. The pair had been friends for a decade, but now they were at loggerheads. If he didn't carry out the murder it would be 'no worse than shooting a sick dog', says Jeremy. He then offered an ultimatum: Either kill this guy for me or I cut all ties implicating you no further in anything that happens next.
