The Panopticon and Discipline and Punishment

The classical Panopticon is a big round room, like an amphitheater. The observation post is ringed with lights that aim at the prison cells. Foucault finds this a very evocative and very important sort of social technology. It sets up in the mind of the prisoner the idea they are always being watched.
