The History of Daylight Saving Time

The idea of changing the clocks in summer was proposed by two men. George Hudson and William Willett were on opposite sides of the world. They both thought it would give them more time to do leisure activities. The first city to observe daylight saving time was Port Arthur, Canada. At the outbreak of the First World War, Germany adopted Daylight Saving Time as a way of conserving fuel for their war effort. It soon became popular with other European countries who followed suit. When the war ended in 1918, several countries ditched daylight saving time - reverting to one single time zone throughout the year.
