The Beginning of a Pagan Symphony by Stravinsky

It's Stravinsky's best attempt at making something authentic and immediately evocative of a world that most of his audience would have had no familiarity with, including himself. There are so many strange things about this opening. One is that it is almost completely dominated by the woodwinds. In 1913, music was still dominated by the lush sounds of strings. For a piece to start and then continue for so long, with just the texture of the wood winds, was already a revolutionary idea.
