The Importance of Working With Monkey Kidneys
Doctors at the hospital in Marburg ran test after test, first looking for the usual suspects like Salmonella and Shigella. When each of those tests came back negative, they enlisted the help of a dozen labs around the world to test for the unusual suspects. And it was looking more and more like it was going to be a rare zoonotic pathogen at the root of all of this. They all worked in a lab either directly with African green monkeys, their organs or cell cultures derived from these animals' kidneys.
