Introduction
The Mahabharata has come down to us through the ages as a book. Many of the important versions are indeed much newer. A massive project was completed in the last century that brought all of the ancient manuscripts together and compared them side by side. It is this English translation by J.A.B. Van Buetonin that I am mostly depending on for my research. For instance, some of you may be wondering why I never mentioned the backstory about Vyasa sitting with Ganesha as his scribe composing the story. Well, it isn't in the critical edition.
