The Life and Times of Hatoyama Haruko

Hatoyama Haruko graduated top of her class in English from Tokyo Women's Normal School, a teacher training college now Ochanomizu University. The program that was supposed to send her there was scuttled due to the objections of conservative government leaders who felt some kind of way about women going overseas on their own. Two years later, continuing her study in Japan, she was introduced to Kazuo by an Umi-i, a traditional matchmaker and the two were married at the end of 1881.
