The Importance of Modality in the Study of Natural Language

Fabritio Cariani: Why do you think it's important to study the meaning of words like ought or should or must or may or can these words of philosophers called modals? What do we have to gain philosophically from this? He says in general modality is interesting both because it does a lot of philosophical work so oftentimes there's concepts that we would want to define in terms of other modal concepts. But more simply in sort of everyday life I think modality is about state of the world that are not the actual state of theworld.
