The Apocryphal Conversation Between Solon and Croesus

Solon's reforms eased social tensions in Attica, by intensifying the competition for political office. He either completely failed to eliminate if it was there previously, or indirectly fostered the civil strife that would soon follow. Within about four years after Solon had left Athens, in either 591 or 590 BC, there was so much political strife that they were unable to elect the nine Archons. There was a period of anarchy as those in the office clung to their positions and refused to step down.
