Why a War Should End Quickly, but Sometimes It Doesn't

Most wars last about five months, but there is no smooth drop off. Most of them end relatively quickly, and then some go on for a long time. Some people would say yes, because this is a war caused by a commitment problem that no peace deal will stick. But more generally, it's because the underlying dynamic is different from short wars.
