"The whole idea that anyone murders anyone for only one reason is so silly to me," Shepard says. "I was willing to consider all of the details anyone wanted to discuss, even if they didn't really make sense." The two men who killed Matthew Shepard in 1998 were known as drug dealers and had been drinking at a bar near where he lived with his family. A lot of what we know about the case comes from news reports; it's not something you can learn by reading headlines or anything like that.
