In 2001, Rodrigo Duterte got on local television and read out the names of 500 people on his watch list. Cash rewards were offered to citizens who could provide information on drug labs or dealers. A few days after this, he sat down for an interview and was asked how he felt about being called the godfather of the devout death squad. He replied: "I would rather see criminals dead than innocent victims die being killed senselessly"
