The Noble Savage in South America
There is an idea of the noble savage in South America. But if we're talking about the system of the slave trade and slavery, as it developed in the Caribbean in the 17th century, I don't think about noble savages. We're talking about people who are defined as commodities, and that requires a very different way of thinking. And there does seem to be that distinctions of very early days between kind of India and China, for instance, as perceived from the West.
