Introduction
Three years after genetic engineering became a reality, it was about to turn into big business. Advocates talked of creating bacteria with geans for things like insuline or blood clotting factors. Drugs would become incredibly cheap, they said. There were also dreams that plants might be engineered, making them immune to pests and enabling them to yield more food. Some imagined that all this launch a second industrial revolution based on our new power over biology.
