The Reclusive Artist Stereotype
When I grew up, it was don't show off. Don't blow you on trumpet. Don't make a show of yourself. And as quite a gregarious and bossy child, I had to have some hard lessons from my parents and my friends at school that I couldn't always be in charge. So there's this way that when you make your art, you can show it to strangers who do get what you get or can at least respond to it and feel something from you. Whereas perhaps the people around you can't. The role of the artist is to see things and to wake other people up to how things can be seen, noticed, discussed differently.
