How to Choose Maintenance Fluids for Children
The adult rates of IV fluids that are needed to maintain uvolemia were published in JAMA in the 1940s. Holiday and Seagr, who were pediatric nephrologists, came up with this kind of way of equating the adult rate of maintenance for body surface area. So I think it's important to note that maintenance really is a concept that only works for healthy children with normal kidney function.
